On the 24th of June 2012 we lost the last known Pinta Island Tortoise, Lonesome George.
He was dubbed as the rarest creature in the world and acted as a celebrated conservation icon. Following his death the Pinta Island Tortoise is now said to be extinct. Lonesome George was thought to be over 100 years old, and the cause of his death is currently unknown.
In commemoration of the beautiful George, the Galápagos National Park Service stated that it was assembling an international workshop in July which will aim to establish management strategies for restoring Tortoise populations over the next decade.
We have lost an entire species due to George’s death. Rest in peace.
